The new museum serves as a window into the works and life of the influential late artist Maqbool Fida Husain.
Qatar Foundation (QF) has announced the upcoming launch of Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Hussain Museum, a new institution dedicated to the life and work of the late renowned modern artist Maqbool Fida Husain.
The museum is set to open to the public on November 28 in Education City, further expanding Qatar’s cultural and artistic offerings.
The museum will present an immersive exploration of Hussain’s creative legacy, showcasing a range of media including paintings, films, tapestry, photography, and poetry.
Designed to serve as a hub for artistic engagement and education, it aims to foster creativity, dialogue, and cultural understanding among visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
The building’s design is based on a sketch drawn by Husain himself, representing his vision for a space that would be a work of art in its own right.
The structure reflects his lifelong interest in innovation and his contributions across multiple artistic disciplines.
Among the works on display will be a selection of paintings from a series commissioned by Chairperson of Qatar Foundation Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. The series, inspired by Arab civilization, was in progress at the time of Husain’s death, with over 35 pieces completed.
A central feature of the museum will be Seeroo fi al ardh, Husain’s final large-scale installation, which will be housed in a dedicated gallery space. The multimedia work celebrates human progress and will be presented through a specially curated show.
Executive Director of Community Engagement and Programming at Qatar Foundation Kholoud M. Al-Ali described the museum as “a space for exploration, discovery, and critical thinking,” emphasizing its role in fostering artistic dialogue and public engagement.
“Designed as a space for inspiration and creativity, Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum reflects Qatar Foundation’s dedication to providing spaces for everyone to explore, enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by art and culture,” she said.
The museum is the latest addition to Qatar Foundation’s network of public spaces within Education City that support its mission to integrate education, culture, and community. It will join more than 100 public artworks already displayed across the campus.
Details on visitor access and programming will be announced closer to the opening date in November.
