The fugitive had been at large for three years for charges of first-degree murder.
Rabih Alkhalil, one of Canada’s most wanted fugitives, has been arrested in Qatar after more than three years on the run, Interpol confirmed.
Alkhalil, aged 38, was being pursued under a Red Notice for serious crimes including two counts of first‑degree murder and conspiracy to import cocaine.
He escaped from the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, in July 2022, aided by two men posing as contractors.
Canadian authorities say the arrest was made possible through close international cooperation involving Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, Interpol National Central Bureaus in Doha and Ottawa, the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia.
During his time in hiding, Alkhalil was reportedly using an alias. Officials say efforts are underway to secure his return to Canada.
Authorities have also charged three people, Edward Ayoub, Ryan Van Gool, and John Potvin, in connection with Alkhalil’s prison escape.
This capture marks the culmination of one of the most complex fugitive investigations by Canada’s BOLO Program, which had placed Alkhalil atop its “Most Wanted” list with a substantial reward as high as $250,000 offered for information leading to his arrest.
