Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim arrived in Baghdad on Saturday for the Arab League Summit, as Gaza tops the regional agenda.
Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani arrived in Baghdad on Saturday to participate in the 34th Arab League Summit and the 5th Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, both set to be held in the Iraqi capital.
Sheikh Tamim was welcomed at Baghdad International Airport by Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, who praised Qatar’s “significant role in supporting joint Arab action and enhancing regional stability”.
In his welcoming remarks, Hussein also underscored the importance of the strategic partnership between Iraq and Qatar and expressed appreciation for the visit, calling it a step toward deepening ties and strengthening Arab unity.
Sheikh Tamim is accompanied by an official Qatari delegation that includes Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, along with senior Qatari officials.
In brief remarks, the Qatari leader expressed his “high appreciation for Iraq’s hosting of this important Arab forum”.
The welcoming reception was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Planning Mohammed Tamim, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Hamid Al-Ghazi, and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Nayef Al-Dulaimi.
The summit is expected to focus heavily on Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, as regional leaders respond to the rising civilian death toll and Israel’s latest controversial plans to intensify military operations.
On Saturday, Israeli forces announced the beginning of a renewed offensive, launching “extensive strikes” on the enclave.
More than 100 Palestinians were reported killed in the past 24 hours, amid ongoing warnings from humanitarian agencies about the worsening conditions in Gaza.
The summit also follows US President Donald Trump’s recent tour of GCC countries, which reignited discussions around a potential ceasefire and humanitarian access to Gaza.
