Designed to provide fast, confidential, and professional mental health support, the helpline has become a key entry point for individuals across Qatar seeking care during times of emotional distress.
Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is marking five years of the National Mental Health Helpline (NMHH), a vital service launched in April 2020 during the Covid pandemic, which now receives more than 2,000 calls every month.

“The National Mental Health Helpline has become a vital support line for people across Qatar, offering immediate access to care when it’s needed most,” said Dr Majid Al Abdullah, Chairman of Psychiatry at HMC.
“Access to timely support helps people manage their mental health early, often preventing conditions from becoming more serious,” Al Abdullah added.
Delivered by HMC’s Mental Health Service (MHS), the helpline is staffed by a skilled, multilingual team of nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, and allied health professionals.
Open to everyone, it offers not only crisis response but also practical guidance on available mental health services for individuals and their families.
The NMHH includes specialised support streams for women’s mental health and substance misuse, making it a comprehensive resource for a wide range of needs.
“Our service continues to achieve high satisfaction rates, with more than 90% of callers rating their experience as positive,” said Katja Warwick Smith, Assistant Executive Director of Clinical Service Development.
“We’ve worked hard to ensure callers receive the support they need in their own language, and our team speaks Arabic, English, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, and Malayalam,” Warwick Smith said.
As the demand for mental health support continues to rise globally, easy access and communication are critical, Warwick Smith highlighted, especially in breaking down barriers to mental health care for diverse communities.
By calling 16000 and selecting option 4, residents across the country can access free, confidential help, reinforcing Qatar’s national commitment to building a more mentally healthy and resilient population.
