The new promotion winners were relegated from the top-flight two seasons ago.
Al Sailiya Sport Club will compete in Qatar football’s top-flight, the Ooredoo Stars League, after being crowned champions of the Second Division League.
The side will make the leap on the back of a strong season, which saw them suffer just two losses, winning eight games en route. That was enough to keep them three points above second-placed Al Markhiya.
The latest — and perhaps the most crucial — of those wins came on Wednesday as Mirghani Al-Zain’s side dashed Al Waab 1-0, moments before lifting the trophy at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
“All players delivered exceptional performances that directly contributed to achieving this accomplishment,” said the club president, Dr. Mohammed Ali Al-Marri, crediting the climb to the “collective efforts and sacrifices” that everyone made throughout the season.
The Peregrines — nicknamed after a falcon known for its strong hunting capabilities and versatility — will return to the Ooredoo Stars League after two seasons.
After struggling at the bottom of the table throughout the 2022/23 season, the side eventually went down, bagging just 16 points throughout the season.
Promotion win comes as a moment of culmination for head coach Al-Zain, who was appointed months after the side dropped a division.
Founded as Al-Qadsiyah Sports Club in 1995, Al Sailiya have yo-yoed between the first and the second division, since winning their first promotion in 2002/03.
Al Sailiya will be replacing Al Khor, currently placed at the bottom of the Ooredoo Stars League, next season.
Al Khor have already been relegated with just 13 points on board, which will essentially make the last game of the season a dead rubber for the side.
Plenty will be on the line, however, for the 11th-placed Umm Salal, who will have to overcome Al Markhiya to stay in the top-flight. The latter were relegated to the second division last year, after losing the play-off to Al Shahaniya.
