The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) has urged its nationals in Qatar to report any incidents in which they are asked to sign substitute contracts, which usually force the employee to work for a lower salary or longer hours than initially agreed.

In a bid to quell fears that thousands may lose their jobs, the Philippines Department of Labor and Employment announced earlier this week that it had struck an agreement with Qatar authorities, requiring architects and engineers to sit an exam to qualify for registration.

All expat engineers and architects are required to officially register with Qatar's Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA), which issues equivalency certificates that enable them to practice in the state.
