Helmet and guns used for paintball

Starting in early August, paintball enthusiasts will be able to face off at an indoor arena on the upper floor of Gulf Mall, near the food court.

The facility was previously set up at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) during Ramadan, but will move to the mall for the next few months.

Speaking to Doha News, the company behind the paintball activity said the arena has an inflatable setup that makes it easy to relocate to other spaces.

At the DECC, the setup fit a maximum of 20 people in a 10 vs. 10 game of paintball.

While playing paintball at the “Game City” arena there, an Egyptian expat told Doha News he was happy to see the activity return to Qatar:

“I really enjoy paintball and I was very disappointed when multiple paintball arenas opened and closed here in Doha. There were at least three that did in the past, and all of them closed after a very short period of time.

Maybe this is also temporary but at least it’s good to see that they opened one indoors.”

Adrenaline rush

Game City was part of a massive indoor souq set up at the DECC last month.

Though most activities finished on June 24, Game City – which included indoor karting, paintball, football and small rides for children – stayed open for an extra two weeks due to popular demand.

Paintball welcomed some 100 visitors a night, according to Elie Elkhoury, COO of Amazing Productions.

“They experienced a new type of adrenaline rush for a change, because in Doha you don’t have a lot of these events,” he said, adding that the indoor arena attracted a wide variety of players, including locals and women.

One thing that sets his company’s offering apart is safety, Elkhoury said. Currently, the company imports high-quality gear, including overalls, helmets and gloves, from Spain.

Additionally, two first-aid trained professionals are always on hand, though there are no reported injuries to date.

Each individual is given a briefing and a testing on how to shoot the paintball guns in a safe manner, according to Amazing Production’s event manager Mohammed Gumma.

At the DECC, individuals got 300 paint bullets for QR100. Elkhoury said the pricing scheme at Gulf Mall will be similar.

He added that his company, which was also behind the dinosaurs show at Gulf Mall during the Eid holidays, is considering setting up a permanent entertainment hub.

“Right now, we’re just trying out the concepts, to see what’s hot and what’s not, but the plan is to have an indoor sports city in the future.”

Movie-goers in Qatar now have a new place to watch the latest releases, following the soft opening of another Qatar Bahrain International Cinema theater (Cineco) at Gulf Mall.

The 13-screen cinema is located on the second floor of Gulf Mall and includes two VIP theaters. Ticket prices start at QR35.

It’s currently among the largest cinemas in Qatar, but appears to be opening at a time when fewer people are going to the theater.

According to figures released by the Ministry of Development, Planning and Statistics, the number of movie-goers in Qatar rose from 2009-2013, but then dropped in 2014.

However, the data also shows that fewer films were screened in 2014, which may have discouraged some would-be movie goers from heading to the theater.

Other cinemas

That said, the cinema market has been rapidly expanding in Qatar.

In March for example, a three-screen cinema operated by Cineco launched inside Al Khor Mall.

And three other large theaters are expected to open in the coming year, including:

  • A 12-screen movie theater at Tawar Mall, which is located down the road from Landmark and Gulf malls and is expected to open by year-end;
  • A 19-screen VOX cinema complex that includes a 4D film experience at Doha Festival City, which is planning a February opening; and
  • A 19-screen theater at Mall of Qatar that includes IMAX and six VIP screens, and is scheduled to open in late October.

A cadre of dinosaurs has roared its way into a popular mall in Doha, scaring and delighting children and adults alike.

According to organizers, the dinosaurs are part of a traveling tour from Amazing Productions that first stops in Gulf Mall, and will head to Landmark and Villaggio malls in May.

The free show consists of four mechanical dinosaurs that are manned by people inside of them, as well as a baby creature.

Speaking to Doha News, organizer Elie Al Khoury said “they have a screen inside like an iPad – it’s like a control room.”

He added that his company, Amazing Productions, was trying to bring “unique concepts” to Qatar.

At Gulf Mall, the show will run twice, from April 22 to April 25 and from April 28 to May 1, from 1pm to 9pm.

Al Khoury said the dinosaurs will come out every two hours for 10-15 minutes. They are also expected to walk around the mall.

In the beginning of May, the show will head to Villaggio, and two weeks after that, to Landmark. All three malls are operated by the same group.
