Trump’s Middle East broker will also head to the region as talks on the second phase of the Gaza truce between Hamas and Israel remain contentious.
U.S. President Donald Trump said that Qatar, a key broker in the Gaza truce deal between Hamas and Israel, wants to “end this whole mess in the Middle East,” adding that the region is doing “relatively well.”
According to Middle East Eye, Trump said the Gulf state wants to end the “chaos” in the region.
On Tuesday, a section of the media reported that officials from both Hamas and Israel confirmed they had reached a deal in Cairo to facilitate the delayed exchange of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners with the bodies of captives.
Israel had delayed the release of 600 Palestinian prisoners on Saturday in protest of the Palestinian group’s handover ceremonies.
Trump’s envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff also confirmed at a Washington event that Israel would be sending a delegation to the region and that that he would head to the Middle East soon as well
“We’re making a lot of progress. Israel is sending a team right now as we speak,” the White House envoy said at an American Jewish Committee event.
“It’s either going to be in Doha or in Cairo, where negotiations will begin again with the Egyptians and the Qataris,” he added.
Witkoff may head to the region on Sunday, according to Axios reporter Barak Ravid.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s delay is a “serious violation” of ceasefire, Hamas said, adding that the second phase would not be possible until the Palestinian detainees are freed.
According to Axios, Hamas has agreed not to carry out any public ceremony when returning the bodies, which Israeli official said will take place on Wednesday.
Hamas said Palestinian prisoners who were previously meant to be for freed “will be released simultaneously with the bodies of the Israeli prisoners who were agreed to be handed over.”
