Qatar’s Shura Council reviewed KAHRAMAA‘s plans for electricity, water and renewable energy, while also advancing a proposed law on digital child protection.
Qatar’s Shura Council held its weekly session on Monday, during which members received a briefing from the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) on the country’s electricity, water and renewable energy strategies, as well as plans to strengthen supply security, improve network efficiency and expand digital services.
The session, chaired by Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al-Ghanim, was attended by KAHRAMAA President Engineer Abdullah bin Ali Al-Theyab and a number of specialists from the corporation, according to QNA.
Al-Ghanim praised KAHRAMAA’s role in providing electricity and water services, developing transmission and distribution networks and enhancing supply efficiency to meet Qatar’s continued urban and economic growth.
He said the state, under the directives of Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, had placed significant emphasis on developing electricity and water infrastructure, improving resource efficiency and promoting sustainability in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
KAHRAMAA’s presentation outlined its plans for both sectors, including efforts to strengthen electricity and water networks, improve service reliability and expand renewable energy generation under Qatar’s National Renewable Energy Strategy.
Renewable energy targets
Al-Theyab said the strategy aims to develop a sustainable and cost-effective energy system while increasing the use of renewable sources in electricity generation.
He noted that Qatar plans to raise the share of renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030, with a particular focus on solar photovoltaic projects and distributed solar generation systems.
The presentation also highlighted current and future solar energy projects, which officials said would help reduce emissions and support environmental sustainability while ensuring grid stability and meeting growing demand for electricity.
Water security and digital transformation
KAHRAMAA also outlined efforts to improve water distribution networks, reduce water losses, expand the use of smart meters and strengthen management of strategic water reserves.
Officials said the corporation continues to monitor water quality through automated systems and is working to improve groundwater management and emergency preparedness through water storage and well rehabilitation projects.
The presentation also covered district cooling services, electricity and water connection regulations, and partnerships with the private sector in infrastructure and renewable energy projects.
In the area of customer services, KAHRAMAA reviewed its billing system, measures aimed at improving the accuracy of meter readings and ongoing efforts to expand digital services and smart systems to improve the customer experience.
Members raise infrastructure and tariff concerns
During the discussion, Shura Council members welcomed KAHRAMAA’s efforts but stressed the need for continued investment in infrastructure to keep pace with population growth and urban expansion, according to QNA.
Members also called for further expansion of renewable energy projects, particularly solar power, and emphasised the importance of public awareness campaigns encouraging more efficient electricity and water consumption.
Several members raised concerns about electricity and water tariffs, particularly for commercial and service-sector users, and discussed ways to balance service sustainability with support for the business environment.
Other issues raised included delays in extending electricity and water services to some residential areas, improving services in rural and desert locations, and enhancing safety standards for the use of central gas systems in homes and residential compounds.
Members also highlighted the importance of expanding the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence to improve network management, speed up responses to outages and enhance service quality.
Responding to the comments, Al-Theyab said KAHRAMAA would continue implementing its plans to develop the electricity and water sectors, strengthen network efficiency and support renewable energy and sustainability programmes.
