Qatar’s foreign minister has expressed reservations about the election of the new Arab League Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Aboul Gheit, Egypt’s former foreign minister under Hosni Mubarak, was elected unanimously after hours of debate, according to Reuters.
QNA reports that the reservations “stems from reasons related to the character of the candidate,” and not with Egypt itself. FM Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that Qatar hopes “that (Aboul Gheit) would be an accepted person by all and would carry out his responsibilities in neutrality.”
