Qatar has launched a major project to upgrade 18 public beaches nationwide, aiming to boost tourism, improve facilities, and ensure visitor safety year-round.
Qatar has officially launched a national project to rehabilitate and develop its public beaches, aiming to upgrade service infrastructure and enhance the overall visitor experience.
The initiative, announced by Abdulaziz Al Rumaihi, director of the Projects Management and Development Department at the Ministry of Municipality, is being implemented in collaboration with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).
It includes the development of 18 beaches across the country, with major improvements set to unfold in the coming months in coordination with municipalities and the private sector.
Speaking exclusively to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Al Rumaihi revealed that the first phase of the project has already been completed, covering eight key beaches: Simaisma, Al Wakra, Sealine, Al Farkia, Al Ghariyah, Safa Al Touq, and Al Kharaij.
He explained that the project forms part of a broader national plan to improve the quality of life and boost domestic tourism by enhancing public spaces.
As part of preparations for the busy summer season, the Ministry has ensured high levels of coordination between its operations and maintenance departments and local municipalities.
Al Rumaihi said these efforts aim to guarantee beach readiness and service continuity at all times. Ongoing monitoring is being conducted to maintain the standard of beach facilities during peak periods.
Discussing the nature of the improvements, Al Rumaihi highlighted that development efforts are guided by need, demand, visitor feedback, and field team assessments. Al Wakra Municipality, in particular, has seen significant additions this year, including the installation of 200 wooden umbrellas, some designed specifically for people with special needs, and 300 shaded seating areas tailored for families and individuals.
Children’s play areas have also been upgraded with safe sandy surfaces and shaded zones, while spaces have been allocated for restaurants, food carts, and other amenities. The entrances and walkways of the beaches are also being beautified, with the planting of trees to enhance both the visual and environmental quality of the surroundings.
To further support the initiative, the Ministry’s Public Relations Department is running promotional campaigns to showcase the new services and facilities, especially at family-friendly beaches. These campaigns include media content promoting events such as the monthly activities at Beach 974, and also raise awareness about responsible beach use.
In light of high summer temperatures, Al Rumaihi stressed that the Ministry has prioritised visitor safety. Measures include the wider distribution of umbrellas, the creation of shaded children’s areas, and the provision of first aid services at major beaches.
He urged beachgoers to follow the Ministry of Public Health’s guidelines, such as visiting during cooler hours, using sunscreen, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure.
Cleanliness remains a top priority, with dedicated cleaning teams working around the clock and additional support from specialised cleaning companies for facilities like restrooms and prayer rooms. Field supervisors are stationed at various sites to monitor conditions and respond to any immediate needs.
In closing, Al Rumaihi reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to expanding development projects that improve the efficiency and appeal of public beaches. He noted that future enhancements will include green spaces and solar-powered lighting to promote environmental sustainability and serve the diverse needs of the community.
