Amid an obesity epidemic in Qatar, a new way of staying in shape has been catching on among residents here – Crossfit.

The strength and conditioning program, which focuses on weightlifting, high-intensity training and gymnastics, has gained worldwide popularity in recent years, and two organizations – Crossfit Quwwa, and Crossfit Oryx – have opened locations in Qatar.

Crossfit workouts usually span 20 to 30 minutes, testing an individual’s strength, cardiovascular endurance, agility and balance.

Crossfit Quwwa, which opened up in the past year in Al Sadd, was one of the first “boxes” to come to Qatar.

They have since branched out with two more centers at the Pearl and in West Bay, with classes ranging from QR1,200 a month to QR10,000 a year.

For practitioners, the allure of Crossfit lies in the discipline and routine it offers, along with an imbued sense of community among those who participate in the exercise regimen.

Crossfit Quwwa has some 3,000 likes on Facebook, and its members have begun competing in regional and international fitness contests.

Crossfit Oryx, which opened six months ago, is also fueling the trend, with over a thousand likes on Facebook.
