Iran’s missile strike on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar triggered swift global condemnation and calls for restraint amid fears of wider regional conflict.
Iranian attacks on a U.S. air base in Qatar on Monday have drawn swift and widespread condemnation from around the world.
According to Iranian state media, the strike was part of “Operation Harbinger” (Annunciation of Victory), launched in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.
Qatar denounced the missile attack as a “blatant violation” of its sovereignty, airspace, international law, and the United Nations Charter.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari confirmed that Qatari air defences had successfully intercepted the missiles targeting Al Udeid Air Base and said no casualties were reported.
He stressed that Qatar “reserves the right to respond directly in a manner proportional to the nature and scale of this blatant aggression”.
Shortly after Qatar’s response, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a statement expressing gratitude to Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.
“I’d like to thank the Highly Respected Emir of Qatar for all that he has done in seeking peace for the region. Regarding the attack today at the American base in Qatar, I am pleased to report that, in addition to no Americans being killed or wounded, very importantly, there have also been no Qataris killed or wounded. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Meanwhile, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) condemned the attack as a flagrant violation of Qatari sovereignty. Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi emphasised the collective security of GCC member states and reaffirmed full support for Qatar.
Several Arab nations echoed similar sentiments. Saudi Arabia called the attack a serious breach of international law and good neighbourliness.
The United Arab Emirates described it as a blatant violation of Qatari airspace, reaffirming its full solidarity with Doha.
Kuwait praised Qatar’s successful defence and pledged full support, including operational resources if needed. Bahrain joined in denouncing the strike and stressed the importance of de-escalation and peaceful resolution.
Jordan warned that the strike represented a dangerous escalation and reaffirmed its full support for Qatar’s sovereignty.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and highlighted Doha’s consistent efforts in promoting regional peace.
The Palestinian Authority also voiced its condemnation and affirmed its solidarity with the Qatari people.
In Yemen, the Foreign Ministry labelled the attack as blatant aggression and pledged unwavering support for Qatar. Oman offered a broader perspective, attributing the latest escalation to a dangerous cycle of retaliation that began with Israel’s missile strike on Iran earlier this month.
Iraq warned of a “broader confrontation” should other actors be drawn into the conflict. The Foreign Ministry emphasised the increasing risk of regional instability if tensions were not addressed through diplomacy.
The Arab Parliament also condemned the Iranian missile strike, calling it a “flagrant and unacceptable” breach of Qatari sovereignty and a violation of international law.
The parliament affirmed its full solidarity with Qatar and support for all necessary measures to protect its security and territorial integrity.
North African states joined the regional outcry.
Egypt warned of “dangerous repercussions” from continued escalation, urging all parties to pursue political and diplomatic solutions.
Morocco condemned the missile strike as an assault on Qatar’s sovereignty and expressed full solidarity with the Gulf state.
Meanwhile, in Europe, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his country’s solidarity with Qatar.
“I call on all parties to exercise the utmost restraint, de-escalate, and return to the negotiating table. This spiral of chaos must end,” he said.
