Qatar affirmed the allegations as baseless, stating that they “serve only the agendas of those who seek to sabotage the mediation efforts and undermine relations between nations”
Qatar has strongly condemned the “false media reports” that accused the Gulf state of paying money to undermine the efforts of Egypt or any mediators between Hamas and Israel.
“The State of Qatar strongly condemns the statements published by some journalists and media outlets alleging that Qatar has made financial payments to undermine the efforts of Egypt or any of the mediators involved in the ongoing negotiations between Hamas and Israel,” read the statement from Qatar’s international media office.
Qatar affirmed the allegations as baseless, stating that they “serve only the agendas of those who seek to sabotage the mediation efforts and undermine relations between nations”.
Qatar has played a pivotal role as a mediator in the ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel, significantly influencing efforts to alleviate the humanitarian impact of Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, that killed more than 61,700 people and wounded 114,095 others since October 2023.
The landmark ceasefire agreement, facilitated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, was announced on January 15 and came into affect on January 19.
Two months later, on March 18, Israel resumed its onslaught on the Gaza Strip, killing 419 Palestinians overnight and wounding hundreds. The attacks shattered the Gaza ceasefire, which had been brokered after 15 months of genocide waged by Israel on the besieged strip.
The “false reports” in the Israeli media surfaced as Israel stepped up the bombardment on the Gaza Strip, effectively collapsing the ceasefire.
“They also represent a new development in the ongoing misinformation campaign that is attempting to divert attention away from the humanitarian suffering and perpetuate the politicisation of the war,” the statement from Qatar’s international media office added.
Qatar’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability through mediation is not credited enough, United States Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff recently said in an interview recently.
“I’ve had a couple of experiences where first I was attacked as being a pro-Qatar sympathiser. Qatar is a mediator here not they’re not a party to the conflict,” Witkoff told Tucker Carlson in the interview aired last month.
“They are good decent people,” Witkoff had said of the Qataris, adding that “what they want is an effective mediation that gets to a peace goal.”
The international media office, in the recent statement, echoed the sentiment.
“The State of Qatar remains committed to its humanitarian and diplomatic role as a mediator between the relevant parties to end this devastating war and is working closely with Egypt in our efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire and protect civilian lives,” it stated.
The statement praised Egypt for its role in the ongoing efforts to mediate between conflicting parties, emphasising on the daily cooperation and coordination between both sides.
“The State of Qatar commends Egypt’s pivotal role in this critical matter, as both sides engage in daily cooperation and coordination to ensure the success of joint mediation efforts aimed at achieving regional stability.”
Qatar reiterated the importance of keeping mediation efforts free from politicisation and distortion, stressing that the primary focus must be on alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people.
“The State of Qatar reiterates that mediation efforts must remain free of politicisation and distortion, and that the priority remains alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people, protecting civilians, and achieving a just and sustainable settlement based on the two-state solution,” it added.
