Ali Larijani has ruled out negotiations with the United States, saying President Donald Trump has plunged the region into chaos with “delusional fantasies”.
Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on Monday that Iran will not engage in negotiations with the United States, firmly rejecting a Wall Street Journal report suggesting that Tehran had attempted to reopen nuclear talks with Washington through regional mediation.
In a post published on X, Larijani dismissed claims reported by The Wall Street Journal that Iranian officials had approached the United States via Oman following a wave of joint U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian targets over the weekend.
Responding directly to the report, the senior Iranian official stated, “We will not negotiate with the United States,” rejecting speculation that Tehran was seeking diplomatic engagement after the escalation.
According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, officials familiar with the matter indicated that Larijani had attempted to signal a willingness to resume nuclear discussions through Omani mediators after the attacks, which came amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Tehran and Washington had recently held two rounds of indirect talks facilitated by Oman and had met as recently as Thursday in Geneva, but the discussions failed to make progress.
Larijani, who has gained significant influence in Iran’s leadership structure following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stressed that “the passing of a great personality has wounded the hearts of all of us,” warning that Washington would face consequences.
“Americans should know that by stabbing the hearts of the Iranian nation, their hearts will be stabbed,” he said, adding that the killing had enraged the Iranian public and would not achieve U.S. objectives.
In a separate post on X, Larijani also criticised Trump’s regional policy, accusing him of destabilising the region. “Trump dragged the region into chaos with ‘delusional fantasies’ and is now worried about further casualties among American forces,” he wrote.
He added, “With misguided actions, he turned his self-made slogan ‘America First’ into ‘Israel First,’ sacrificing American soldiers for Israel’s pursuit of power.”
Larijani concluded that Iran’s military had not initiated the confrontation, stating that “today the Iranian nation is defending itself” and that Iran’s armed forces “did not start the aggression.”
