Japan has never won the World Cup as they’ve never even made the semifinals, only advancing to the round of 16 twice. In the 2018 World Cup, they became the first-ever Asian nation to beat a side from South America after they won 2–1 against Colombia in the group stage. This will mark their seventh appearance in the tournament. Regionally, the team has won the Asian Cup four times.
