After tying with China, Qatar still has a chance to play in 2018 World Cup

Qatar/China match

A nail-biter of a qualifying match between Qatar’s national football team and China ended in a 0-0 draw yesterday.

Qatar now holds four points and is still second from the bottom in its group during the third 2018 World Cup qualifying round.

Syria is one point above it, and China trails with only 2 points.

Qatar football coach Jorge Fossati

In a statement, coach Jorge Fossati said:

“We didn’t have a great match today but we gained a point thanks to our defense. This point is important because we have lost three games already. The first half of the campaign is finished and now we will do our best in the second.

If we can win against Uzbekistan, it will be a difference of six points. We think we have a big chance.”

Road to 2018

Competing in Russia is an important goal for Qatar, whose team has never qualified to play in the World Cup.

Team Qatar will automatically get a chance to participate in 2022 because the nation is hosting that tournament.

But in recent history, no team has ever not earned its first chance to compete beforehand.

The next qualifying matches will be held in March 2017.
