Some six tunnel boring machines (TMBs) have been working on the line, with the first beginning in September 2014.

Approximately 85 percent of the tunneling work has now been completed on the project, up from 77 percent roughly six weeks ago. Tunneling is scheduled to completely wrap up by this autumn.

The transportation agency declined to provide any details about the incident that took the life of Juanito Pardillo, who described himself as a driver, heavy equipment mechanic as well as fire suppression and lube technician on his Facebook page.
