Qatar’s Ministry of Defense has denied media reports that the country’s Defense Minister accused Saudi Arabia and the UAE of supporting the failed coup in Turkey earlier this month.
In a statement released by QNA, the Ministry of Defense stated that an image of a purported tweet by Dr. Khalid Al Attiyah was “fabricated.”
Several publications, including Al Masdar News, have shared a screenshot of the alleged tweet, which appeared to come from Al Attiyah’s official Twitter account.
Questionable tweet
The message claims that Al Attiyah obtained a confidential document that proved an army officer in the UAE and a Saudi Arabian prince were aware of plans for the coup, but failed to notify the Turkish President.
The defense ministry emphasized that people should only trust information from official sources.
Qatar is a close ally of Turkey, and its foreign ministry recently condemned the Turkish military’s attempt to overthrow the government there, calling it “lawless” and a “violation of the (country’s) constitutional legitimacy.”
Both nations have previously condemned the coup attempt.
