Athletes in Qatar to compete for ‘strongest man’ title on Friday

Aspire Zone has invited eight athletes to face off in a new competition in Doha this weekend, called “Qatar’s Strongest Man 2014.”

The event, which is open to the public, will be held from 2pm to 7pm on Friday, Jan. 24, at Aspire Park, near Burgery restaurant.

The eight men who are competing are: Brothers Ali Issa Al Bin Ali and Abdullah Al Bin Ali from Qatar; Ali Riyad from Syria; Asanka Saman Dissanayake from Sri Lanka; Mohammed Awad from Sudan; Sherif Mohammad Gamal from Egypt; Joseph Iroo Ekadeli from Kenya; and Fadel Ismail from Lebanon.

In a statement, Aspire described how the winner of the competition will be determined:

“The three contestants with the highest number of aggregate points over the five different challenges will be declared the winners and will each receive a trophy as well as a cash prize. The remaining participants will be awarded with a range of complimentary gifts.”

The fetes of strength include pulling a truck, the deadlift, weight-lifting, the giant tire flip and a sand bags lift.

Aspire added that the men had been shortlisted after an application process in which they were given a set of “strength tests.” Each competitor has also passed a medical exam.
