In a rare sign of political protest in Qatar, a group of 50 expats on Friday formed a human chain on the Corniche to support the “Via Catalana” (the Catalan Way) movement.

The expats joined more than a 100 other groups forming chains across the world to raise awareness of their efforts to be recognized as their own nation, independent of Spain. The main Via Catalana event – a 400km-long chain – is expected to be formed on Sept. 11, Catalonia’s National Day.

In a statement, the group said:

Despite the small Catalan community in Qatar, 50 enthusiastic men and women, spanning all age ranges, enjoyed a great afternoon and tried to help spread the voice of our Catalan Way.
