To boost appreciation for astronomy and celestial bodies in Qatar, the government is considering a proposal to set up a space center here, complete with a planetarium and observational tools, the Gulf Times reports.
The idea is being pitched by the Research and Development Division of Qatar Foundation, its director of coordination and compliance told the newspaper.
Speaking on the sidelines of the first Doha International Astronomy Conference, Dr. Khalid Al-Subai said that there are only three professional astronomers working in Qatar. Establishing a hub, possibly at Katara Cultural Village, could attract more people to the field, he continued:
“There is a great interest in the study of astronomy in the country and many youngsters want to pursue it. Once the new center is realized, there will be many academic courses and research activities.”
The conference, which began yesterday and ends on Wednesday, includes activities for the public at the Qatar National Convention Center. Residents, including children, are invited to view an exhibition of photographs of the world’s most beautiful and historic sites against night-time backdrops of stars, planets, and celestial events.
There are also a few displays and activities set up outside of the QNCC, which are free and can be visited from 8am to 10pm through Wednesday.
