Days after taking down several speed cameras along the Doha Expressway, authorities have installed new high-tech radars in their place.

According to Al Sharq, the new cameras can catch motorists who overtake from the right, fail to use their seatbelts or talk on the phone while driving.

Earlier this week, the director of the Ministry of Interior’s traffic department said that more than 60 intersections around Doha now have these types of radars.

That includes Ramada signal and junctions on Al Waab and Airport Road, Brig. Mohammed Saad al Kharji said, according to the Qatar Tribune.

Traffic citations fall

Al Kharji added that more “smart” radars are on the way and credited the technology for a recent drop in traffic violations.

According to government figures, citations fell 12.6 percent year-on-year to 110,606 in June 2016, the most recent figures available.

In particular, radar violations totaled 66,959), down 17.3 percent over June 2015; and tickets for running a red light totaled 1,480, down 23.4 percent year-on-year.
