Germany will headline as Qatar’s next Year of Culture partner in 2017, Qatar Museums (QM) has announced.
As part of the tie-up, more than a dozen events will be held in Doha next year, in collaboration with the Germany embassy and the Goethe Institute, among others.
The lineup will include a friendly football match as well as art and photography exhibitions, Mohammed Al Othman, QM’s director of public and international relations, told Doha News.
Qatar-Germany’s Year of Culture follows other tie-ups with Japan, the UK, Brazil, Turkey and most recently, China.
Chinese festival
As this year’s partnership with China wraps up, QM said it is planning a Chinese festival at the MIA Park next month.
The four-day event will run from Nov. 2-5 and feature musicians and performers from the eastern province of Zhejiang.
There will also be a Chinese market, tea house, photography exhibition space, food stalls and a special children’s area.
Additionally, a photography exhibition will open in Katara Cultural Village next month.
It will showcase the work of four Chinese and two Qatari photographers who traveled to each other’s country to document the culture through their own lenses, QM said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Treasures of China exhibition that opened last month at the MIA will continue until January 2017.
The display includes 116 pieces that span 5,000 years of Chinese history, including a collection of soldiers from the first emperor’s Terracotta Army.
Other plans
More imminently, QM is planning to open a major retrospective art exhibition showcasing more than 500 pieces from the work of a renowned Iraqi artist.
Dia Al-Azzawi’s I am the cry, who will give voice to me? exhibition will simultaneously take place across two venues – the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) and Al Riwaq in the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Park.
It will run for six months from Oct. 16 until April. 16.
The exhibition will feature more than 546 works spanning 50 years. It charts the career of Al-Azzawi, who also made the Carousel interactive installation currently up at MIA Park.
I am the cry has been curated by Catherine David, from the Center Pompidou in Paris, and will be one of the the largest solo exhibitions by an Arab artist.
