Four things to do in Qatar this weekend (July 31 to Aug. 2)

Sabah Arbilli

In addition to ongoing Eid celebrations, there are a few unrelated events happening around town over the next few days, including sports tournaments and an art show. Here are our picks:

Alif by Sabah Arbilli

Renowned British-born Iraqi calligraphy artist Sabah Arbilli will host an exhibition focused on the first letter of the Arabic alphabet – Alif – at the Intercontinental Doha – The City hotel.

The exhibition, inspired by the holy month of Ramadan and Eid, will showcase his paintings, sculptures, installations and calligraphy. It runs through Sept. 17, and is free and open to the public.

Pinoy basketball tournament

The Filipino community in Qatar is holding a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Friday, Aug. 1, at the Al Gharafa Training Gym.

Held in conjunction with Pinoy Basketball of Qatar, the event will see local Filipino basketball trios compete for the grand prize of $1000, Android LCD Tablets, MVP gold rings, and other prizes.

The event is free and open to the public, and games will be held from 8am to 2pm.

Filipino basketball celebrity Cyrus Baguio, known for his dunks and acrobatic moves on court, will grace the event. For more information, call 3311 6805.
