Parts of a busy junction at E-Ring Road and Najma St. will be closed for the next seven weekends to finish work on converting the former roundabout into a signalized intersection, Ashghal has said.
The new diversions, near the under-construction Kahramaa awareness park, come a month after the junction partially opened to traffic.
The first closures and related diversions will start early Friday morning and last until Saturday, April 2 at 5am.
Construction on the remaining stages will be carried out during the following weekends and be completed by May 21.
What to know
Signage will be set up each weekend informing motorists which parts of the junction are closed and direct them to detours.
The entire intersection will be shut during the final weekend of work. The detours planned by Ashghal effectively create a one-way counter-clockwise flow of traffic around the intersection.
Eastbound motorists approaching the junction will be directed south onto Al Madeena St. They will then turn left onto Al Thumama St., which turns into Al Hadara St. after it crosses Najma St., and left again past the Grand Mart to rejoin E-Ring Road.
Drivers who need to continue heading north on Najma St. will have to make a U-turn on E-Ring and head back towards the closed junction.
Westbound motorists will be directed to turn right onto Jaber Bin Hayyan St. and then turn left at the roundabout onto Oqba Bin Nafie St., which will feed motorists onto the northbound lanes on Najma St.
To rejoin E-Ring Road, motorists will have to U-turn on Najma St., exit onto a sideroad two blocks before the petrol station before turning right onto Al Rabab St. and left onto Bilal Bin Rabah St.
The work is one phase in a wider QR240 million project in the busy Najma/Old Airport area that involves widening roads, upgrading drainage networks, as well as creating pedestrian and cyclist paths.
When the signal-controlled junction is fully open this spring, it will have four lanes and three dedicated turn lanes in each direction on E-Ring Road, and three lanes and three dedicated turning lanes each way on Najma Street, the public works authority previously said.
