In a two or three-hour-long effort, Civil Defense has put out a large fire behind the Kilo Market in Abu Hamour this afternoon, as well as a separate blaze at a waste treatment center off of E-Ring Road.

Residents reported seeing smoke in the Wholesale Market area shortly before 1pm.

Traffic diversions were put in place around the market and Al Fazaa police cordoned off the area.

The fire appeared to originate near the Omani souq, which is a popular marketplace for buying dates.

One witness told Doha News that the blaze started after a nearby supermarket caught fire. Civil Defense and Fazaa declined to comment, but the Ministry of Interior tweeted that firefighters are working to control the blaze:

Around 2:45pm, the MOI said the fire had been brought under control and added that there were no injuries:

Thick, black smoke could be seen billowing from the area as far as the Corniche this afternoon, prompting residents to wonder what happened:

Summer is fire season in Qatar, and the country has already seen more than a dozen big blazes this month.

According to the Peninsula, there were four fire-related incidences around town yesterday, including three in the Industrial Area and one in Al Rayyan.
