Iranian state-linked media reported that the commemorations are expected to draw participation from representatives of more than 100 countries, making it one of the largest state funerals in modern history.
Speaker of Qatar’s Shura Council, Hassan bin Abdullah Al-Ghanim, attended a funeral ceremony in Tehran on Friday, where he paid respects at the coffin of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian state media.
Iranian state television (IRIB) broadcast live footage from the capital showing the start of the proceedings, as official delegations from more than 100 countries reportedly arrived in Tehran to take part in the ceremonies.
Funeral rites and processions for the late Iranian leader are scheduled to take place from July 3 to July 9 across several cities in Iran and Iraq, before concluding with burial in Mashhad, according to Iranian authorities.
The multi-day programme of ceremonies follows Khamenei’s reported killing in a joint U.S.–Israeli airstrike on Iran on 28 February, which snowballed into weeks of war and regional escalations.
Senior representatives and heads of state from multiple countries were reported in attendance in Tehran, including delegations from Iraq, Pakistan, Russia, China, Türkiye, India, and several other states, alongside religious and parliamentary figures from across the region.
Saudi Arabia’s deputy foreign minister and delegation also paid their respects at the casket of the slain Iranian leader in Tehran.
Further delegations, including political and religious groups from Lebanon, Palestine, and other countries, were also reported to have taken part in commemorative events, while additional international representatives are expected to arrive as the ceremonies continue.
The funeral programme is expected to continue over several days, with ceremonies held in Tehran before processions move through other cities, including Qom and locations in Iraq, ahead of the final burial rites.
