Al Jazeera has appointed veteran journalist Jamal Elshayyal as Director of Digital Content – Languages amid a major leadership reshuffle under Director General Sheikh Nasser Bin Faisal Al Thani.
Al Jazeera Media Network has appointed veteran journalist Jamal Elshayyal as Director of Digital Content – Languages, as part of a wider restructuring of the network’s digital division.
The move comes amid a major reshuffle across Al Jazeera’s management and leadership following the appointment of Sheikh Nasser Bin Faisal Al Thani as Director General in September.
The changes signal a shift toward a younger leadership team and a renewed focus on expanding the Qatar-based broadcaster’s global digital reach.
Sources at Al Jazeera told Doha News that Elshayyal will oversee the expansion and modernisation of the network’s English-language digital platforms, while also leading efforts to grow Al Jazeera’s presence across multiple languages and markets.
According to the same sources, one of his early projects may involve relaunching Al Jazeera’s Balkan services through digital platforms, alongside an ambitious international rollout targeting new audiences in regions such as China, Indonesia, and Russia.
Elshayyal, a former senior correspondent and presenter for Al Jazeera English, was part of the team that launched the channel in 2006.
Over the years, he has reported on major global events, including the 2010 Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara and the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, earning recognition as one of the network’s most trusted on-air journalists.
The appointment reflects management’s confidence in Elshayyal’s track record, particularly following his success in launching and leading Al Jazeera 360, the network’s digital streaming platform that quickly gained traction with younger audiences.
