Arabian Business reports:
Magnolia Bakery, the New York cupcake maker made famous by the television series Sex and the City, plans to open stores in Qatar and Kuwait in the next 18 months, its owner said.
The store, which opened its first overseas outlet in Bloomingdales Dubai last year, is undertaking a global expansion, to include outlets in Brazil, Portugal, Turkey and Mexico.
“We consider ourselves to be a high-end luxury brand,” Steven Abrams said in an interview with the Financial Times.
“In the rest of the world, cupcakes don’t have the cultural longevity and history, but maybe in some of those cultures they will become a staple. The market is ripe for us.”
Cupcake shops have been popping up across Qatar over the past couple years.

Seen at Katara: A new cupcake place, evidently coming soon.
The as yet unopened Red Velvet Cupcakery stands just before Chapati & Karak on the parking lot side of the cultural village.
UPDATE: Tracy Wilson, General Manager at Red Velvet Cupcakery in Washington, DC says the Doha branch is due to open in July.
“Hopefully you will be able to enjoy our cupcakes on 2 continents now,” she said in an email.

-First place (and winner of a QR100 voucher to Tasmeem) goes to:
Philippa Innes, a 24-year-old British expat who teaches English as a foreign language in Doha. This kind soul said she plans to treat her entire class to cupcakes at the end of the week, after they survive final exams!
-Second place (and winner of a QR50 voucher to Tasmeem) is:
Haya Al-Mannai, an 18-year-old Qatari journalism freshman at NU-Q. Al-Mannai aspires to be a photographer and also hopes to write a novel one day, set in Qatar before the discovery of oil and gas.
-And third place is:
Gazanfarulla Khan, a 24-year-old Indian expat who has lived in Doha for the past 18 years. Khan is a pilot & air traffic controller who plans to thoroughly enjoy all the cupcakes a QR50 voucher from Tasmeem will get.

It takes time for trends to reach the tiny Gulf country of Qatar. But that’s ok, because when they finally arrive, they always get the most whole-hearted welcomes. Case-in-point: the cupcake craze.
In the past year, the number of places to buy cupcakes here has proliferated so quickly that even the most devoted foodie can’t keep up.
Are all of these cupcakes worth our love? According to my extensive research, some of them are, and some of them are not.

Muhammed Miyan has never won anything in his life.
“I was never lucky enough,” says the 27-year-old accountant from Kerala, India.
But maybe his luck is starting to change.
On Thursday, Miyan, nicknamed Michu by his family and friends, won our giveaway and received a dozen cupcakes.
The prolific tweeter (@michu10 has churned out almost 49,000 tweets in a year and half!) chatted with @DohaNews at The Centre on Thursday while collecting his prize.
“I really love Doha,” says the expat, who has been here for four years. “It’s a very calm place.”
So what will Michu do with a dozen cupcakes? Luckily, he’s got his whole family here in Doha with him to help share in the sugar rush.
(You are going to share, aren’t you?)
Congratulations, Michu! Thanks for following us, please continue to give us your feedback and enjoy the cupcakes!
I have no idea and I don’t want to know!! :)
