A gas cylinder exploded at the Al Katim Restaurant, injuring 10 people and apparently gutting the restaurant near Midmac Roundabout on Salwa Road this afternoon, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior confirms.
The ministry said Civil Defense brought the fire under control quickly, and that the injuries sustained by patrons were relatively minor, although the damage to the restaurant appeared to be substantive.

Al Arab newspaper cites Brigadier Abdullah Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director general of Civil Defense, as saying the injuries were a result of flying glass fragments from the explosion, and that most of those who were wounded have been treated and released from Hamad Hospital.
The Peninsula newspaper, however, reports that there were three serious injuries:
Eight of the 10 injured remain admitted at Hamad General Hospital. The three who sustained severe injuries were shifted to the intensive care unit in the trauma section, according to hospital sources. The three are Nepalese, while the nationalities of the other victims were not known.
Word of the incident first spread via Twitter and Blackberry Messenger. One nearby resident said they heard sirens around 4:20pm.
